About Your Equine Vet in Kansas City, Dr. Keith L. Wagner
As Dr. Wagner was raised on a livestock and row crop farm in west-central Missouri, farm life cemented a desire in him to help the horse, which he grew up with, and the people who own them. He is a 1989 honors graduate from the University of Missouri-College of Veterinary Medicine in Columbia Missouri, which, when combined with his continued search for knowledge and answers has lead him to also obtain certification in Animal Chiropractic, Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine-Acupuncture and training in Applied Kinesiology. His philosophy of treatment is to evaluate the whole horse not just the mechanistic, single issue evaluation as promoted in Traditional Western Veterinary Medicine. He is a member of the American Association of Equine Practitioners, Missouri and American Veterinary Medical Associations, along with the International and American Veterinary Chiropractic Associations. Through these organizations he has served on numerous boards in regards to client and veterinary education. As part of the Veterinarian-Farrier Liaison Committee he lectured to veterinary students on the horse foot. Due to his love of educating, he has also given lectures to clients and veterinary students on numerous veterinary topics including Chiropractic and Acupuncture Care and is a member of the Lab Instructor Faculty at Options for Animals Chiropractic College. Along with being an active member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church; he enjoys the outdoors by gardening, hiking, hunting and fishing. Married to his wife Joyce in 1992, they are raising and training two children.
Philosophy of Practice
As a maturing Traditional Western Veterinary Medical (TWVM) practitioner, I questioned why some cases didn’t respond as anticipated and what seemed to be missing in the evaluation or treatment of some cases. Lameness cases always seemed to be at the head of that list. Therefore with my thirst for knowledge as to why TWVM did not produce the desired results, I asked “Why is That?” and continued my learning process of the horse and the biomechanical function of the animal.
Since the controlling organ system of the body is the nervous system, I furthered my education in Chiropractic and Acupuncture along with Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (TCVM). These have direct effects on the nervous system and energy system of the animal. To hone my evaluation of the neuro-function of the system and its effects on the animal as a whole, I have added the use of Applied Kinesiology to my black bag. With Applied Kinesiology and the knowledge of Functional Neurology, I have a better understanding of the “Why is That” in why TWVM does not answer all the questions of previous cases.
Along with my desire to continue to learn and ask “Why is That”, my philosophy of practice is to evaluate the whole animal, not just the area of concern. If one body structure is affected the whole organism is affected. Acupuncture along with Chiropractic and Applied Kinesiology is a whole body evaluation that is more sensitive to physiological changes then Traditional Western Medicine mechanistic diagnosis or treatment options. Consequently a loss of balanced health can be discovered before a Traditional Veterinary Medical diagnostic test can identify an abnormality.
